Elastic headband / Ear loop attachment for facemasks

 In Tips

One of the essentials in facemask manufacturing is the elastic headband/ear loop attachment.

Fulflex elastic tapes can be attached as a headband or ear loop in a variety of ways to provide comfort and fit essential for facemasks performance.

Let’s take a look at them.

  1. Headband attachment to facemask by stapling method
  2. Ultrasonically or heat welded attachment method
  3. Adhesive bonding for facemasks
  4. Entrapment of polyisoprene headbands for flat fold face masks
  5. Sewing of our headbands for face coverings

Headband attachment to facemask by stapling method

The facemask should be elasticated in a way that helps the facemask fit snugly yet comfortable.

There are several ways of attaching headbands/ear loops to facemasks. Stapling is one of them and preferred for N95 facemasks. We have designed Fulflex elastic tapes specially to resist tearing while stapling.

Ultrasonically or heat welded attachment method

You won’t get the best-fitted facemask if it is not elasticated appropriately.

Out of several ways of headband/ ear loops attachment methods, our Fulflex TPU tapes can also be ultrasonically or heat welded to nonwoven in the flat fold and half-cup masks.

We can provide recommended settings as a starting point to ensure good bond strength to the facemasks to fit firmly and comfortably against the skin.

Adhesive bonding for facemasks

To avoid frequent adjustment of facemask- which can lead to cross-contamination, appropriate attachment of elastic headbands to the facemask is of utmost necessity.

The elastic headbands can be attached to the facemasks in a variety of ways. Besides stapling and welding TPE and TPU tape attachment methods, the adhesive bonding attachment method is used by facemask manufacturers for facemasks. IMA (Techno web Converting) provides equipment to produce masks that includes hot melt adhesive attachment.

Entrapment of polyisoprene headbands for flat fold face masks

Facemask headbands must be comfortable to the user. Hence, user comfort is always at the top of our mind while designing the elastic tapes/ headbands for facemasks. We make sure they are compatible with different attachment methods.

Facemask manufacturers use the stapling method for the mechanical attachment of our polyisoprene elastic tapes. An alternative design uses the entrapment of polyisoprene headbands for the flat-fold facemasks.

Processed on a mask equipment machine from NCM using an ultrasonic welding unit, these are duck-bill masks with the elastic welded between 2 PP layers.

Sewing of our headbands for face coverings is one way of attaching the headband/ear loops to facemasks.
The elastic tapes are sewn to form ear loops for medical or simple facemasks.
